THE ART OF BERYL MALLINSON and our friends |
|
|
This site is dedicated to the art and memory of Beryl Mallinson. Beryl, born 25-7-1916,only daughter of Harry and Beatrice Mallinson, spent her childhood in Vale st., Clovelly, NSW, Australia. Attending local school, learning ballet and entering many art works in Sydney weekend news papers. The Julian Ashton Art School was attended from 1931 to 1936 with teachers such as Henry Gibbons, A Perry, Thea Proctor and John Passmore. Beryl soon had a portfolio of commercial art, specialising in baby clothes and stocking adverts for major Sydney retailers, to the extent of having her own studio in Rowe St, Sydney, complete with a telephone. 1944-55 saw Beryl married to E. J. (Jim) Goldsteen (wartime Dr. science, Lft. RN), son Robert, with oil and watercolours everywhere, many pots and sculptures were also produced with the help of her friend Peggy Hutchinson. The new house in Dundas soon had a very full back room studio, resulting in the construction of a larger separate studio in the late 60s. The commercial side was wound down for the pursuit of "true" art. In ensuing years, Beryl, continued her passion for art, receiving critical acclaim from the Sydney art community. The Royal Art Society, Royal Agricultural society, Parramatta Art Society, and later, The Ryde Art Society became part of her life. Ultimately, Beryl was rewarded with a fellowship of the Royal Art Society, Sydney; Cultural Doctorate in fine arts; fellowship of International Biographical Society, Cambridge; fellowship of the Academia Italia. Beryl continued "her" art into her mid seventies until she succumbed to cancer in 1991. Her paintings have found homes in New York, Budapest, Amsterdam, Cambridge, Rome, and, of coarse, many places in Australia. The art continues, the colourful character of Beryl is missed by all that knew and loved her.
